James H. Campbell was born on April 12, 1917 in Gadsden County, Florida. Known as Jim, he graduated from Quincy High School and later the University of Florida. In 1940, he volunteered for Naval Flight training and received his "Wings of Gold" in September of 1941. He was assigned to the training in command as a flight instructor. In 1943 he received orders to a Navy fighter squadron. Fighting Five was one of the first squadrons to receive the new Grumman F-6-F Hellcats. His unit was assigned to the new carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, CV-10 and saw action at Marcus Island, Wake Island, the Marshall and Gilbert Islands, the Caroline Islands with the Japanese base of Truk. His unit also participated in attacks on the Marianas and the Palau Islands and Hollandia, New Guinea. After returning from over a year of sea duty, he was assigned to NAS Daytona Beach as an instructor in Advanced Fighter Tactics. He was released from active duty in November 1945. In 1946 he married Pauline bourassa, Navy nurse from Lowll, Mass. They had four children; Brenda Slappey, Allen Campbell, Hill Campbell and Lisa Seay. |
