Angel in the Cockpit Memoir Captain Arthur Ray Hawkins, U.S. Navy (Ret.) and Louise Bancroft Hawkins |
About the Book |
|
This true story is of the exploits of “Hawk”, one of the Navy’s most decorated Naval Aviators, during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was decorated three times with the Navy’s highest award for bravery, the Navy Cross. The manuscript tells of his actions in all the major battles our forces fought, on their island hopping march across the Pacific, to the Japanese Homeland. A detailed description of each battle, the rescue of the Prisoners of War and the signing of the Japanese peace treaty are all covered. There are details of dog fights that happened in the air battles where Hawk scored fourteen air victories. There is also some of the humorous side of the pilots as they face the stress of impending combat as well as their handling of the deaths of their comrades during combat. Hawk gives intricate details of his combat in Korea. The North Korean Communists cross deep into South Korea, are pushed back north almost to their northern border, where the Chinese Communists enter the war and force our troops back below the 38th parallel. United States losses were great as Naval Air covered the escape of the Marines from the trap they had been pinned into, at the Chosin Reservoir. Angel in the Cockpit derives its title from Hawk’s many close calls, some of which appeared to have received divine intervention. The manuscript vividly covers these close calls while paying homage to a member of what has come to be known as the “Greatest Generation.” |
